IuK Initiative
Information and Communication
of the Learned Societies in Germany
(for the
German Original page).
The IuK-Initiative
acts for the interests of the about 120.000 members of the
Learned Societies in Germany
with regard to all topics of the management of digital
information and communication
in all fields of Science.
Some present activities are

Introduction of Professional Home Pages (including Metadata) for individual scientists and departments/Institutes.
Launch will be January 19999

Service for individual scientists to create
and attach metadata for his/her scientific
documents by a WWW-Form
to improve the retrieval results of search engines.
Forms for Physics and Mathematics are available.

Dissertations Online:
Standards for
Metadata, and an easy
upload form for them, for
retrieval, for
the workflow within the department and to the
libraries and the legal subtleties of
examination work vs. publication and copyright
are dealt with in a
DFG-Projekt
project financed by the
German Science Foundation DFG.
English translation of the results is in preparation.

A workgroup is looking for optimal future business models for libraries
information (books, journals,..), including e-information, with the name:
E-Journals.

Conceptual work and contact to the users across all fields for the
Government funded Programme The German Digital Library
Global Info.

The International Embedding of IuK Projects is done by contacts to the respective
activities abroad. A
list of contact partners is maintained to ease the
contacts from abroad.

IuK serves on demand refereeing and referees on all topics of Information Management
in Science. Inquiries should be sent to the
spokesman of IuK.

The IuK is a member of the W3C Consortium which sets the future standards of
the world wide web.
